Character Name: Newton Artemis Fido Scamander
Series: Harry Potter universe, specifically as seen in the film Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.
Age: 29
From When?: Shortly after the end of the film
Inmate/Warden:
Warden. On the surface, Newt appears to be a pretty archetypal awkward geek, concerned mostly with his research and connecting more with his creatures than other people. But although he’s not good with people, he cares deeply for them and loathes to see anyone hurt or hurting. There’s a reason he’s a Hufflepuff; he’s kind, works hard, and has a strong moral compass. He doesn’t always follow the laws of wizarding society, but neither does he break them easily or thoughtlessly, and when he’s caught he accepts fair punishment. He’s also doggedly loyal. Whatever inmate he winds up with, once he’s attached he’s going to be hard to shake, even if he doesn’t agree with everything they do. After all, this was the man who took the blame for an accident his friend caused that was dire enough to get him expelled from Hogwarts. He’ll never be a tough warden, but he will be a fair, protective, and loving one (in his own awkward Newt way).
Item: Newt’s wand, made of lime, ash, bone, and shell.
Arrival: N/A
Abilities/Powers:
Despite the little snag regarding his expulsion (which was eventually overturned), Newt is a fully qualified wizard. Information on his O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. scores isn’t currently available, but it’s possible to glean from canon where his skills lie.
Starting with wand skills: Newt has a knack for charms. Given the destruction some of his creatures are capable of, it’s no wonder he’s a skilled hand at Mending Charms in particular, but he’s also seen using them to summon objects, immobilize a person, open locks, and erase memories. Sometimes without even needing to speak the spell aloud. But he can also hold his own in a duel - he defends himself relatively successfully against a disguised Grindelwald. He also Apparates quickly, easily, and without the need for any spoken words.
Practical skills relating to magic: Newt’s most obvious talent is, of course, handling and caring for magical creatures. He’s put in years of study, but also has an inborn talent for both understanding and communicating with them. It’s not a psychic link or Disney Princess every animal loves him trope; when he publishes his research he even writes he’s occasionally had to beat a creature off with a tea kettle. But he’s a calming influence that creatures naturally seem attracted and responsive towards. Some creatures are even intelligent enough and have a good enough rapport with him that he can trust them to aid him in a tight spot, or even fights. He’s also good with potions, which makes sense when a significant part of Magizoology involves discovering uses for beasts’ hair, venom, droppings, etc. in potion making. Not to mention it helps tremendously with being able to treat unfortunate side effects of job hazards like bites and stings.
Other skills: Newt’s exceptionally well-traveled and knows a lot about foreign countries and cultures, though he’s more plugged into the magical communities. He’s an excellent researcher and actually quite an engaging writer for someone who has so much trouble with spoken communication. His talents with magical creatures also translate just fine to non-magical ones, when he has reason to engage with them. He’s also nimble and fast and deceptively athletic (and no wonder, when he’s liable to be eaten otherwise).
Items: He also, y’know, has a magic suitcase that’s really a doorway into a workshop combined with multiple elaborate habitats for his various creatures. Large things shrink to fit inside, and the suitcase will even pull them in, to some extent. It has a switch that makes it “Muggle Worthy,” IE appear to only hold a few changes of clothes, a pocket watch, and a few other mundane essentials. It’s not great at actually keeping the creatures inside contained, however. When they get restless and agitated enough, they can pop the latches and wriggle their way loose, so he has to keep a constant eye on it.
Personality:
People’s first impressions of Newt are almost universally terrible. He’s soft-spoken and incredibly awkward, preferring to avoid eye contact and say as little as possible when he has to interact. He moves stiffly and uncomfortably around people, and smiles like it’s something he has to remind himself to do. If his mind is on something else - and it almost always is - any awareness of personal space, private property, and manners of any kind go out the window if such mores stand between him and his goal. See: breaking into a bank vault and jewelry store without a second thought to round up his wayward Niffler and neglecting to explain anything to anyone unless pinned down and questioned directly. It’s not deliberate, he just rarely thinks to share more than the most immediately necessary information. He’s somewhat aware of his faults, even saying that most people find him “annoying.”
Around his creatures, a different man comes out. Newt at work is calm, confident, entirely focused on the task at hand. He smiles like it comes naturally, showing an almost paternal (maternal?) kindness to his menagerie. Even when he’s frustrated with the beasts he works with - looking at the Niffler here - he remains even-tempered and gentle, rarely raising his voice even when he’s delivering a scolding. He’s also quite agile and quick on his feet, proving definitively that awkward doesn’t always equal clumsy.
But just because Newt doesn’t easily express that kind of compassion and kindness to his fellow humans doesn’t mean he doesn’t possess those feelings towards them. He’s sensitive, and hates to see any creature suffering. He also possesses few prejudices against his fellow men, treating muggles no differently than he does wizards and witches, and calls American relations with non-magical people “backwards” for forbidding marriage or even friendship between the two groups. He, however, apologizes to the no-maj Jacob before (unsuccessfully) attempting to Obliviate (wipe his memory of magic) him, and later freely shares magical knowledge with the man.
And it’s not just courtesy. Newt tells of a girl he met in Africa, who’d been imprisoned and punished for having magic until she became an Obscurial, which is what happens to a young witch or wizard when their magic is oppressed to the point where it becomes an uncontrollable, parasitic force inside them. They (almost) all die before the age of ten, and this girl was no exception, but Newt tried everything in his power to save her. He’s devastated over his failure, and over her death. Tina may ask him to save Credence when it becomes clear that the young man is another Obscurial, but Newt was clearly going to help regardless. He even says “I won’t let another one die.” He’s well aware of the danger he’s walking into, as well - he hands his suitcase of precious creatures, his most precious possession, off to his friends Queenie and Jacob, along with his book of notes on how to care for them, in case he doesn’t make it back.
On that note? Newt is incredibly brave. Not boastfully so - like most Hufflepuffs he’s really exceptionally humble and reserved about his talents - but when someone or something needs help, he doesn’t think twice about putting himself at their side. The earliest example in canon is when his dear school friend, Leta Lestrange, was magically experimenting with a dangerous creature and it escaped and threatened another student. Newt took full responsibility, even knowing the punishment would be expulsion, and only Dumbledore’s (then a teacher) support kept him at Hogwarts. Then there’s his work with Ukranian Ironbellies - one of the most fearsome dragons known to wizardkind - on the Eastern Front during the great war, not to mention his cool and fearless handling of any number of other beasts that could easily do him harm. He also fights his way with Tina out of the Magical Congress of the USA headquarters, when he absolutely is terrified, but manages to keep his cool and think clearly through the ordeal. And lastly, of course, engaging in a duel with Percival Graves, who he suspects to be a Grindelwald supporter, while a powerful Obscurial is losing control around them. And even apprehending the man when he turns out to be Grindelwald in disguise.
Newt Scamander isn’t a man who goes looking for adventure (or who cares one whit about glory), but when it finds him, he rises to the occasion.
Barge Reactions:
In a word, Newt would find the Barge fascinating. Followed shortly by overwhelming. He wouldn’t be sure where to begin in terms of interacting and forming relationships with other residents, but he’d be quite happy to observe them, their pets, their odd behaviors and customs. The wizarding world is a fair bit more unpredictable than the muggle one, and he is a consummate traveller, so many floods and ports he’ll be able to take in stride. Being extremely even-tempered works in his favor there, as well. At worst, he may try to see if he can mitigate effects with magic or potions. Breaches he’ll probably find considerably more alarming, and at least start out coping rather poorly with the loss of identity. It took him long enough to be comfortable in the skin he was born into - he doesn’t have much resilience for being jerked around like that.
Path to Redemption: N/A
Deal: After the events of his canon, Newt would be asking for the one thing he doesn’t think he can accomplish on his own: a cure for Obscurials.
History: From the wiki.
