"There was a man, once, named Percival Graves. But by the time I knew him, he'd been... replaced. Grindelwald had taken his face and quite possibly his life. He was... using Credence to find an Obscurial. Wanted it to be his weapon." There's quiet anger in his voice, a bitter edge that doesn't fit well with his usual gentle and dreamy temperament.

"He threw Credence away when he thought he wasn't needed anymore. And now, it seems, he has him back."

"What did Credence tell you about him? About-- this time, and the last time?"

He doesn't want to slip up and tell Newt something he shouldn't be talking about.

"He thinks Grindelwald can help him - is the only one who can. The rest- his crimes speak for themselves. And what he said to me himself."

"But he knows what the guy did, right? How-- how bad he is."

Newt hesitates. "He's- Credence didn't grow up in our society. He didn't see the war. Hasn't been exposed to the politics. And Grindelwald-" Newt runs his hand through his hair. "I can't... can't speak for him. But he's very good at convincing others that everything he does is for the greater good. For their greater good."

And - he knows but doesn't say - Credence has been surrounded by radicalism his whole life. Of course he'd be more vulnerable; he doesn't know what's normal.

"I think you're right about that," he's willing to admit. "That he mighta been convinced about something or other. But I dunno what's real and what ain't."
